Art and Integrity

We are fed up with movies that coast along with technological wizardry in lieu of meaningful content.

We recently saw two movies that hit us like a sucker punch.in the gut: the documentary about the Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei Ai Weiwei:Never Sorry and The French film Beloved, Les bien-aimes directed by Christophe Honore.

Both dealt with real life challenges: resistance to conformity and illegitimate authority, the individual and the State, illness, ageing, and the complexities of love and death.

No easy answers, no happy endings.

You are a hero by muddling through and putting one foot in front of the other.

The characters accept their fate–amour fati!
The message–a life of integrity consists of facing the future by integrating the past.

Both films inspire us to embrace what the Greek writer, Kazantzakis (Zorba the Greek, 1964)  called the whole catastrophe known as life.

Or as Ai Weiwei put in contemporary terms Never Retreat; Re-Tweet!

Citizenship Culture

One of the most exciting aspects of President Obama’s speech at the Democratic Convention was his emphasis on citizenship! The great thing about America is that as citizens we have certain inalienable rights: the main one being the right to vote! All of us who support a vision of the future that has as its foundation the conviction that a democracy can only function with a population that exercises citizenship.

CITIZENSHIP = RESPONSIBILITY and CONCERN for the COMMONWEAL.  Now for a brief lesson in civics: the commonweal means that we care about each other and that as a society we care about and for each other

For far too long we as a Nation have been confusing freedom with license. Freedom is not license. Freedom has responsibilities. America is not the land of do whatever you want and to hell with everyone else.

The November election is crucial to getting us back on track. Success is not measured by dollars alone. As a society we must nurture a culture that is concerned with the Citizenship and the Commonweal.

UNCLE SAM WANTS YOU TO CARE AND PARTICIPATE in making our society a democracy with heart.

Republican Obscenities

The Science of Magical thinking

The Republicans have shown their true colors. They are indeed a party that hates women, cares not at all about children and despises the working class, and the working poor.

The Republican party purports to be on the side of morality, specifically, Christian values. What would Christ say when he heard Akin from Missouri state the oxymoron, legitimate rape?!

The Republicans live in the land of magical thinking.  They quote quack medical experts who state erroneous facts about women’s bodies: these idiots have come up with a theory that when a woman is raped hidden anti-spermicides spring into action and prevent pregnancy. Another Obscenity!

What puzzles us is how any woman can call herself a Republican? Perhaps the answers can be found in The Stepford Wives. For all we know all of these women are robots designed by the same scientists who brought us the idea that women have torpedo hormones that zap unwanted pregnancies!

As we did in our last blog we leave you with this question. WHAT IS TO BE DONE?!

International censorship of political Kultur

The Tsar is back! or is it Stalin? No, it’s contemporary Russia. The three women of Pussy Riot have been sentenced to 2 years hard time by a Russian court for “hooliganism” and “religious hatred.” All of this comes about because they staged guerilla theater in a Russian Orthodox cathedral.

Artists take notice. There is no intellectual or artistic freedom in the new Russia. Same old same old. Paul McCartney and Madonna have criticized the harshness of the sentencing. Even, the Russian Orthodox church has called for forgiveness and mercy.

“What is to be done?”

Support organizations like Amnesty International that is fighting for clemency.

Workers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your integrity!

Adapt or Die

Human’s as control freaks and killers of natural beauty!

Both of us love the natural world but not in a romanticized way. Javs spent several days in rural upstate New York, enjoying a friends garden wherein she got stung by two bees reminding her that wildness still exists.

The culture of nature is wildness. We humans think we can control everything. Daily we are reminded that we can not. Global warming is a direct result of human of human stupidity and greed in its attempt to harness nature to our desires.

The last seven months of 2012 are the hottest in historical record.  That’s what happens when you mess with Mother Nature. A farmer who Javs spoke to near Woodstock told her that the bees this year were wilder and more ferocious than ever because of the excessive dryness and heat. He felt that they were in a perpetual sexual frenzy.

We live in Queens and the vegetation is taking on a tropical aspect. We feel we are living in Florida, only now Florida is cooler than here.

So what is the culture of nature? Adaptation! Life forms that are flexible will adapt. But what about us humans who use culture to make nature adapt to us?

Where do WE go from here?

End Game: Instinct vs. Civilization!

End Game: Instinct vs. Civilization!.

End Game: Instinct vs. Civilization!

Instinct or Civilization

On Saturday 7/28, we had the pleasure of seeing a new play by Otho Eskin, Final Analysis at the June Havoc Theater (312 W. 36th St. off 8th Ave.) The action of the play takes place in 1910, Vienna. We meet Gustav Mahler, Sigmund Freud, Joseph Stalin, Alma Mahler, Ludwig Wittgenstein and a mysterious young artist at a traditional Viennese cafe.

What makes this play so timely? Final Analysis strikes a chord because the play deals with the ongoing struggle between instinct and civilization. Freud’s discussions with the failed young artist who happens to be Adolph Hitler reveal to us that for some people love is destruction.

This brings to mind the horrific events in Colorado wherein the young man calling himself, the Joker has a love affair with death and annihilation.

Not to mention our society’s love of guns all in the name of self-protection while its underside is death. Our instincts to protect ourselves at all costs errodes the very structure of civilization.

As in the play, we are in a pivotal moment of history which way do we go?

Heroes with feet of clay

Reading the most recent report exposing Penn States’s failure to confront and take action against a moral degenerate because of the millions of dollars invested in their sports culture.

There is no sportsmanship today. There is only making money no matter what or who is sacrificed to  the Gods of gold!

Who cares about the loss of innocence? Just bring in the Big Wins and Big Bucks.

The corruption of Penn State is symptomatic of our society’s slide into decadence!

Whose Living Room Is It?

What’s private–What’s public?
We live in a paradox. We’ve never had so much information available to us about each other and yet we don’t know each other at all.
Any given day you can find yourself sitting next to someone who is listening to their Ipod, earphones leaking music that you don’t want to hear. You are reading your book and your space is now invaded by someone else’s taste in music. You say “excuse me, could you please lower the volume.” The response usually goes something like this, “this is America I can do anything I want.”
Or on a bus going to work. Someones on their cell having an argument with their girlfriend or boyfriend, dropping F bombs all over the place at the top of their lungs. You ask them to keep it down and they scream, “get out of my business.”
Just two episodes of thousands of confusing messages that you are exposed to daily.
What is currently considered private and public?
HOW DID PRIVATE SPACE BECOME PUBLIC?

Independence Day

Just how independent are we as thinkers? Are we thinking the thoughts we’ve been programmed to think? Or are we actually conscious of what goes into our thinking?

On this July 4th we are challenged to become more conscious; in so doing, we are on the road to freedom!
